On Record Store Day 2012, Phish will release Junta, the band's first full-length studio album, as a Limited Edition Deluxe 3-LP vinyl set, available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country. Junta marks the band's second release in conjunction with Record Store Day, and the first time Junta has ever been released on vinyl.
This LE Deluxe 3-LP vinyl set is limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies. Junta was recorded at Euphoria Sound Studios in Revere, Massachusetts in 1987 and 1988 on 16-track 2" tape and was mixed to 1/4" stereo reels. In addition to writing and performing all the music, the band produced the album themselves.
Junta was originally self-released on cassette tape in May 1989 with packaging created by the band (included in the new vinyl package). The album was remastered and rereleased as a double CD (and cassette) in October 1992. Junta was certified Platinum but, until now, has never been heard on vinyl. The vinyl release was created from the original stereo master reels with lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Each LP is pressed onto 180g audiophile grade vinyl and includes a free MP3 download of the entire album (transferred from the new vinyl master).
2,500 of the Junta Deluxe 3-LP sets will include a brand new Limited Edition hand-carved, hand-printed linolium block poster by Jim Pollock, created exclusively for this release. These editions will be distributed randomly at participating independently owned record stores across the country, but will be clearly marked.
This LE Deluxe 3-LP vinyl set was created exclusively for Record Store Day. Junta will be available in stores only beginning Saturday, April 21st. For a complete list of participating record stores, please click here.

If you're wondering why Union Federal was left out, it's probably because it's almost a physical impossibility. That track, while awesome, is 25 minutes long. The longest side on a record I've ever seen was Inna Gadda Da Vida, and that was just over 17 minutes. Even if they were to put it on the album, there would still be no room for Sanity and Icculus without adding a fourth record. Plus it would sound really crunchy and distorted towards the end, something to be avoided in an audiophile release such as this. Who knows, maybe there will be some goodies on side F, maybe outtakes, rehearsals, maybe even laser etching. Whatever the case, I'm just glad its coming out on wax. It will officially be the first record I've spent over $25 0n.
I spoke with my local record company and they said there were going to be a $40 and a $63 Junta Vinyls. Could anyone tell me what exactly is going to be the difference? The record store employee told me that the $63 vinyl had a Pollock art cover, so is it going to look a bit different from the $40 vinyl?
Please consider LIve Phish Vinyl releases!
Thanks
Todd
