Backyard Party, 320 Spear Street
South Burlington, VT, United States map

Set List

Show Notes

This show was a daytime party in the backyard of an apartment rented by James Bracken, Lou Nixon and Stacey. Cilla Foster lived in this apartment at one point but not during this party. This show was not listed in the April or May 1989 Phish Updates. Before Foam, Trey said “we’re Phish from Burlington, Vermont” and dedicated the song to Mike McKnight calling it “a song about his life”. Before Contact, the band announced that cars were being towed out on the street and that there was a parking lot across the street. Trey introduced Mike’s Song as “Molly’s Life” and said “we wrote it this afternoon. It’s called She No Are No Nice Guy. Feel free to bound joyously when we reach the trampoline segment.” Continuing the fun, Mike’s Song and Weekapaug Groove contained some alternate lyrics. Before Split Open And Melt, Trey announced that the song was written about Ian and the Pig, referring to Ian’s party that took place the following weekend. The You Enjoy Myself vocal jam began as “Zenzile” and developed into Godzilla which was also sung as “GodCilla”. The setlist for set II is unknown except for Chris Kuroda’s guest sit-in on vocals for either Alumni Blues or Possum. Because the tapes in the archives and circulating are set I only, It is possible Toph sang on both songs. This show featured the 1st and only known performance of Dazed and Confused (Led Zeppelin cover).
