Show Notes

This was Phish’s third Winston-Salem performance and their 1st show at LJVM affectionately known as The Joel – a multi-purpose arena with a listed capacity at the time of 7,500. Dave Matthews Band opened. Tickets cost $18.50. Trey was on crutches with his foot in a brace due to torn ligaments. Foam included a tease of Dixie. Mike’s Song featured an audience member, 9-year old Katherine Lang, substituting for Trey on the mini-tramps for the trampoline routine. The beginning of I Am Hydrogen included the lyrics, “I walk awakening on the misty fields of forever.” Possum included All Fall Down secret language. After Possum, Trey announced “we want to try to do one last song and we’d like to try to do is do it without any microphones…so that would require great amounts of quiet. Let’s see if we can do it..” Amazing Grace was subsequently performed without microphones. Drums featured Fish and Carter Beauford from the Dave Matthews Band on separate drum kits. After Drums, Carter stayed behind his kit while the rest of DMB (Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley and Stefan Lessard) joined Phish onstage for a Jam that developed into the 1st performance of All Along The Watchtower. Dave Matthews took lead vocal duties on the Phish debut of the Bob Dylan classic made famous by Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead.
