Phish - 1997

Doctor Music Festival
Escalarre, Spain

Set List

Show Notes

This was Phish’s 1st show in Spain and their only performance at Doctor Music Festival – a multi-act festival in the idyllic setting of the Pyrenees Mountains of Northern Spain. The festival was held on a plain called El Pla de Santa Maria near the tiny village (which at the time had just 20 year-round inhabitants) of Escalarre. Also on the bill were Blues Traveler, Ani DiFranco, Alice Cooper, Ziggy Marley, David Byrne, Steve Winwood, Rage Against The Machine, Megadeath, and The Jim Rose Circus. Phish played a 1-set show on the Alt Àneu Stage (or possibly the Esterri Stage) which they shared with Beef, Supernaturals and 311. Tickets cost Pts 12800. After Mike’s bass solo in Beauty Of My Dreams, Trey introduced him as “Cactus.” You Enjoy Myself included a rare Wolfman’s Brother tease (only other known Wolfman’s tease was 4/30/94) some crowd chanting and Fish testimony “Joe Moore!” plus a vocal jam that conjured I Wish. After You Enjoy Myself, the crowd broke into a football (soccer) “Olé, Olé, Olé” chant. This was the last show on the Europe tour. After this show the band and crew traveled 180 miles overnight to their Barcelona hotel before flying back to the United States the next day where the band continued interviews for The Phish Book and prepared for their U.S. tour. The March 1997 Doniac Schvice gave some insight about the upcoming US tour and announced The Great Went: “Things are heating up literally (the sixth warmest Vermont winter on record) and figuratively at the home offices in Burlington. The late breaking news is that we’ve found a fantastic new site for this year’s follow-up to The Clifford Ball: Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, ME. With the new site comes a new name – The Great Went. The Great Went will feature many of the same ingredients as the Ball – camping (more grass, less pavement this year), three sets each day, tasty cuisine and talented artists, performers and craftspeople, to name a few; but count on many surprises and new twists as well. There is a new ticketing scenario for The Great Went as well…initially we are offering only a single ticket for this entire event, which includes all of the music and all of the camping from when you arrive until you leave (Friday noon through Monday afternoon). Later it is possible that we may offer a Sunday-only ticket, if space permits. Saturday-only tickets will not be sold.”
