Show Notes

This was Phish’s second (and last to-date) performance at Markthalle. Tickets cost DM 35,00. The Bang A Gong soundcheck was the first known performance in almost four years (since 3/19/93 soundcheck). The T.Rex cover has still never been played in public. Attack On The Bass from the soundcheck was sung by Trey with backing vocals from Fish “the bass is the place.” This show featured the debut of Mike’s Modulus bass, which he used instead of his Languedoc bass up until the encore. The show-opening Cities was the first played in nearly three years (since 7/5/94) and included some Mike foot bell. Dave’s Energy Guide was teased during this breakthrough Wolfman’s Brother. Reba ended without whistling. Possum included a heavy metal intro and All Fall Down secret language. The jam out of Mike’s Song featured teases of and lyrics from The End and Peace Frog (The Doors covers), and Careful with That Axe, Eugene (Pink Floyd cover). This was the first (and only to-date) Mike’s Song > Lawn Boy combination, and Lawn Boy and Weekapaug Groove both included quotes from The End. Weekapaug Groove was unfinished and had a Can’t You Hear Me Knocking ending. Portions of this show were compiled and released in October 1997 as Slip Stitch and Pass – the second live Phish album and first to be culled from a single show. The CD booklet graphics were created by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis (usually associated with Pink Floyd) and depicted the band members with European aliases: Fish was Jacques, Mike was Leroy Elroy, Trey was Heir Necklace (he had a crazy neckbeard) and Page was M.C. Neon Cellgap. After this show the band and crew traveled 210 miles (plus a ferry ride) overnight to Copenhagen, Denmark.
