Phish - 1997

Hurricane Open Air Festival
Scheeßel, Germany

Set List

Show Notes

This was Phish’s only performance at Hurricane Festival. It was a 1-set show on the Summer Solstice at a multi-act festival in Lüneburg Heath/Scheessel. The festival originally began in the 1970’s under the names Es rockt in der Heide (“It’s rocking in the Heath”) and First Rider Open Air. Argent played the first festival on this site. The event was renamed Hurricane Festival in 1997 with an estimated 20,000 attendees. The music took place on the Eichenring – a sand motorcycle racetrack. Tickets cost DM 72,00. The bill included Daft Punk, Ani DiFranco, Bad Religion, Ben Folds Five, Primus and Rammstein. Earlier in the day the House of Blues Radio Hour aired, featuring music from Billy Breathes and pre-recorded interviews with Page and Fish. This was the 1st Samson Variation played in public. Limb By Limb had a new solo Fish ending, which Fish tried twice (the second time with vocals) while Trey told the background story. “That’s the official ending to the song – a brand new song called Limb By Limb…In Fish’s defense, I wrote that beat out on a drum machine and I thought it was humanly impossible.” After this show the band and crew traveled 276 miles overnight to Loreley, Germany.
