Show Notes

This was Phish’s only performance at Spiaggia di Rivoltella – another of the venues for the 1997 Laghi Lombardi in festival Folk-Rock-Blues Music Festival in the Lombardia Lake District of Italy. Other bands on the bill included the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Joan Baez, Jimmy Vaughan, G.Love and Special Sauce, and Ronnie Earl. Phish played at the Spiaggia (Beach) di Rivoltella on Lake Garda. The soundcheck during the breezy afternoon was free and open to the public, resulting in a bunch of unusual covers and audience interaction. Church bells were ringing nearby when the band started their 1st and only known rendition of Hell’s Bells (AC/DC Cover). You Shook Me All Night Long was played for the first time in more than eight years (since 4/20/89). Trey introduced Phish’s 1st and only known MMMBop (Hanson cover) by saying “Fish will now do his version of James Brown singing Hanson’s MMMBop” and Fish retorted “I’m an 11-year-old sex machine!” The 1st known Another One Bites The Dust (Queen cover), And It Stoned Me (Van Morrison cover), Only Shallow (My Bloody Valentine cover) and The Banana Boat Song (Harry Belafonte cover) played by Phish provided the soundtrack to the first and only Soundcheck Limbo Karaoke Contest, during which the band invited fans onstage to sing and limbo. And It Stoned Me included a tease of Let It Be from Page. Stash had a funky jam. The third-ever (and last to-date) Italian You Enjoy Myself was unfinished and ended without a vocal jam with a drop into Waste. After this show the band and crew traveled 322 miles overnight to Lyon, France for a couple days off.
