Show Notes

This was Phish’s fourth performance at Providence Civic Center and the second show of a 2-night stand known, along with the previous 2-night stand at Nassau Coliseum, as “Island Tour.” Tickets cost $25.00 and the show was sold out. The opener was the only Oh Kee Pa > YEM pairing to-date. Down With Disease, Maze and Possum were unfinished. This was the 1st Shafty played – a rearrangement of Olivia’s Pool as heard on The Story of the Ghost. Both Possum and Cavern were heavy funk versions with stops and starts and Mike foot bell. Possum ended in a jam with Trey saying “It’s getting near the end of this little four-day run here. It’s kind of weird having to stop after four days. We can’t end this whole thing without a little more funk, so for those of you who want to take off, take off, but for those of you who just want to dance to the funk we’re gonna stay around and keep grooving.” The jam grew into an extended funk Cavern (see also 6/14/97), which included the alternative “dropped her in the dung” original lyrics. The house music after the show was “Theme from the Godfather.” This show was released in 2005 on CD, download and streaming at as part of LivePhish The Island Tour. Between this show and the next, the band and producer Andy Wallace got together in Vermont for the Ghost Meat II session, Trey debuted his 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes project (with Russ Lawton and Tony Markellis) at Higher Ground, Mike sat in with Max Creek at Club Toast, and the band continued recording what would become The Story of the Ghost at Bearsville, Trey recorded At The Barbecue with James Harvey, Dave Grippo and Jennifer Hartswick for his One Man’s Trash album, the band did the album photo shoot with Loren Haynes in NYC, and traveled to Europe to kick off summer tour.
