Show Notes
This was Phish’s only performance at Espace Julien – an ornate nightclub decorated with stained glass and glass art nouveau “to recreate the atmosphere of a sacred Temple of Music” – opened in 1984 with a capacity of 1,000. Tickets cost FrF 110,00. Llama was unfinished with a jam that segued into Wading In The Velvet Sea. Set II began with a Trey rap/rant, “I Love Jimi Hendrix and friends…of course I also love Danny Bonaduce – that’s why I’m here for my second career after starting as The Partridge Family’s bass player” and he quoted/teased Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque (Tony Remeo cover popularized by The Partridge Family) and introduced Fish as “The Orchestral Greasy Troll”. 2001 included teases of Super Bad and The Star Spangled Banner. Magilla was played over a Caravan-like feel. Ya Mar included some extra commentary by Trey about the “vampire child” line and individual solos broken down into duets: Fishman and Leo, Cactus and Trey, highhat and clavinet, foot bell and low guitar, crash (china?) cymbal and Rhodes, “footstomping, everybody footstomping”. Ya Mar also included teases of Magilla and St. Thomas. Funky Bitch included members of the Son Seals Band sitting in on guitar and horns, who threw in teases of Take Me To The River and Bathtub Gin. After this show the band and crew traveled 325 miles to Andora, Spain.
