Show Notes
This was Phish’s second performance at Darien Lake PAC. Tickets cost $27.50 and the show was sold out. After Love Me, Trey noted that it was Elvis Week and that song was for Elvis, as is Sparkle. A unique Jam connected Harry Hood and Colonel Forbin’s Ascent. Set II featured Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters (who were traveling cross-country on “Grandfurthur Tour” in the 2nd Furthur bus – a 1947 International – enroute from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “I Want to Take You Higher: The Psychedelic Era 1965-69 exhibit). The Pranksters aka “The Bozos” appeared during Colonel Forbin’s Ascent, a brief bit of Fly Famous Mockingbird, Frankenstein and the Merry Pranksters Jam. Trey began his customary narration during the opening section of Fly Famous Mockingbird but explained that this time Colonel Forbin did not find Icculus or the Mockingbird, but instead encountered “Ken, Uncle Sam, Bozo, EZ Kesey”. Trey then introduced Kesey – dressed as Uncle Sam – who began an extended “Bozos” rap, which the band kicked off by teasing If I Only Had A Brain (The Merry Pranksters Jam also included teases of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Monty Python’s Spam Song). Kesey’s rap connected Trey’s narration with the Merry Pranksters Jam by way of an extended Frankenstein, which was used as a bed for the Pranksters’ escapades. Kesey continued his rap throughout Frankenstein with chants of “Bozo” and other hijinks, including what Trey called “interpretive dancing.” The Merry Pranksters Jam proceeded until Trey opined of Kesey’s creative musings, “see what happens when you take too much acid thirty years later.” As the Bozos left the stage, the Merry Pranksters Jam developed into a funky groove during which Trey announced “we’re supposed to start the Famous Mockingbird now, but the funk is too deep – we can’t stop!” Instead of returning to Mockingbird, the Pranksters Jam led directly into Camel Walk. After this show the band and crew traveled 763 miles overnight to Limestone, Maine for The Great Went.
