Show Notes

This was Phish’s first performance at Nassau Coliseum – a hockey arena opened in 1972 with a capacity of 18,100. It was the first show of a 2-night stand known, along with the following 2-night stand at Providence Civic Center, as “Island Tour.” Tickets cost $25.00 and the show was sold out. After NICU, Trey explained the Island Tour, saying the band was getting bored at home and wanted to play some shows. Island Tour was announced 37 days before the start of the run and 4 days before tickets went on sale. The Island Tour Stash was unfinished and included Frankie Says teases. Chalk Dust Torture ended with a “Charge!” tease – Trey held the last note to thank everybody for coming out, to introduce Fish, and to end on a high note. This was the 1st Birds Of A Feather and Frankie Says played. After Birds, Page thanked the crowd and Trey said “we’re gonna play that one lots.” Before Wolfman’s Brother, Fish teased Fikus which Trey said was “from our next album.” Mike teased the Star Trek theme during the Island Twist. This show, including Funky Bitch > Nassau Soundcheck Jam and Birds Of A Feather soundcheck, was released in 2005 on CD, download and streaming as part of LivePhish The Island Tour. The Spring 1998 Doniac Schvice Phish News gave an update on spring and summer plans “Mud season (Vermont’s “fifth” season, although some would argue that we have no spring) has arrived a little ahead of schedule at the home office this year, and with it a flurry of activity on several fronts. The band heads out this week for a brief run of four dates. April 2 & 3 at the Nassau Coliseum and April 4 & 5 at the Providence Civic Center, before turning their energies to the next studio album. They’ll be working with producer Andy Wallace throughout April, May and June on the project, and expect to release the results sometime this fall.”
