Show Notes

These previously-unreleased selections comprise a special audio download EP. All proceeds benefit the Waterwheel FoundationThese selections were compiled and mastered from the soundboard reference tapes to celebrate the 10th and 20th anniversary of the 3/18/97 Benefit for Lake Champlain and launch of Phish Food ice cream. This special show at Phish’s hometown Flynn Theatre marked the worldwide debut of the new ice cream flavor and the beginning of Phish and Ben and Jerry’s combined efforts to harness the magic of music, ice cream and local synergy to clean up the Lake Champlain Basin. More than a decade later, royalties from Phish Food still fund The Waterwheel Foundation which the band created to support Lake Champlain cleanup efforts. Thank you for your support!Ben & Jerry Intro by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield preceded the start of the show.  Cars Trucks Buses with Dave “The Truth” Grippo on alto saxophone and James Harvey on trombone.  Phish debut of I Told You So – with Tammy Fletcher on vocals.

This was Phish’s fourth (and last to-date) show at The Flynn. Tickets cost $27.50 and were only available in person at the Flynn Box Office and sold out on the day of the onsale to a big crowd that snaked around the corner onto St. Paul Street. Needless to say the show was sold out. It was a Benefit For Lake Champlain celebrating the launch of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food Ice Cream and the creation of The WaterWheel Foundation, which was founded to oversee the band’s charitable activities including the cleanup of Lake Champlain and social services especially those benefitting women and children. Free Phish Food was provided for all in attendance. Soundcheck (except Walfredo) included the horns. The opener was the first Cinnamon Girl played in more than eight years (since 3/1/89). Trey teased Barracuda during Harry Hood. Cars Trucks Buses, Suzy Greenberg, Character Zero and Funky Bitch featured Dave “the Truth” Grippo on alto sax and James Harvey on trombone (Suzy included the horns jamming on James Brown’s “Soul Power” and a Chameleon tease from Grippo). During Character Zero the band wished Ben Cohen (of Ben & Jerry’s) a Happy Birthday. Set II included the 1st I Told You So (Jimmie Davis/Rex Griffin cover) and Love Me Like a Man (Bonnie Raitt cover) played by Phish – both of which were sung by Tammy Fletcher who joined the band on vocals. Hello My Baby was performed without microphones. Portions of this show were released in 2007 on LivePhish.com as a 10th anniversary tribute to The WaterWheel Foundation. The March 1997 Doniac Schvice Phish News broke the news about Phish Food: “We’re pleased to announce an exciting new collaboration with our VT neighbors, Ben & Jerry’s – a gooey, chocolatey, marshmallowy concoction called Phish Food. If you haven’t tried it by the time you receive this, check with your local grocery or convenience store. We’ll be donating all royalties due Phish from sales of the flavor and related merchandise to restoration/clean-up efforts in the Lake Champlain Basin. Look for more information about this in future newsletters as we formalize our giving program.” Between this show and the next, Brad and Carini threw their first Garcia party, the band continued interviews for The Phish Book, and Trey and Tom convened in Vermont for the “Pecked By The Dove” and “Trampled by Lambs” writing sessions. Trey and Lar Duggan recorded Ernie Stires’ composition, Samson Riff and Trey launched New York! (the band) with Mike, Pistol Stamen, Tom Lawson and James Harvey. Mike released his first book, Mike’s Corner (a collection of more than fifty short stories), sat in with Max Creek at Club Toast in Burlington and directed and displayed his short film Goodwood in a Boston exhibition “Extended Play: Between Rock and an Art Space” at the Photographic Resource Center. Fish sat in with Galactic in New Orleans during JazzFest and played Pork Tornado dates at Club Toast and Iron Horse in Northampton. The band sang the national anthem at the Corestates Center in Philadelphia (their first performance in the New Spectrum) for the Rangers vs. Flyers NHL Eastern Conference Final game 2. By the end of May, Phish began rehearsals, learning tons of new music and preparing for the upcoming Europe tour. The Summer 1997 Doniac Schvice Phish News broke the news of a new addition to the family: “We’re pleased to announce that Trey and Sue have a beautiful new baby daughter – Isabella Anastasio. Isabella was born at home at 7:52 pm on April 22 as the full moon was peeking over the Green Mountains.”
