Show Notes

This was Phish’s fourth performance at The Spectrum – the first show of a 2-night stand. Tickets cost $25.00. On the night off before this show Phish sang the national anthem before a Flyers vs. Sabres hockey game at the Wachovia Center (aka Spectrum II). Before the show, the band/Elektra were presented with Gold (Junta and Rift) and Platinum (A Live One) albums from RIAA. Trey’s family was present, including Trey’s father (Ernest II) & grandfather (Ernest Sr.). Funky Bitch from the soundcheck was sung by Trey and included The Joker (Steve Miller Band) quotes. Down With Disease was unfinished. The Makisupa Policeman keyword – uttered by Mike – was “pot.” Set II was dominated by a funky non-stop Mike’s Groove. Simple included a breakdown to a Trey and Page duet. Dog Faced Boy was the first in more than a year (since 8/12/96) and was played with a calypso beat. Ya Mar included a Crosseyed And Painless tease and alternate lyrics in a full-band tribute to Ernie Sr. by Trey who told Page “Play it Leo, for Gandpoony!” Weekapaug Groove started slowly, included an Izabella tease, and picked up in speed to a grand finale. This show and the next night were released in 2023 as ‘The Spectrum ’97’ box set, which includes the Funky Bitch Soundcheck from the 12/2/97 soundcheck.
