Show Notes

This was Phish’s seventh performance at MSG and the second show of a sold-out 3-night stand. Tickets cost $27.50. This is one of the longest 2-set shows in Phish history clocking in at nearly 3.5 hours. Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley was played for the first time in more than eight years (since 5/28/89). At the end of Punch You In The Eye, Trey did some theremin-like feedback moves with his hand. Stash included a Trey tease of Night in Tunisia. This monster AC/DC Bag had a 25-minute funky/jazzy jam that including teases of Crosseyed and Painless, Third Stone From the Sun and Psycho Killer. Harpua had a big buildup of the NYE “stunt” with a Trey rap about being in 4th grade at the clearing behind John Witherspoon School and watching Lost in Space on television when he underwent a life-transforming experience. The Robot telepathically told him to put away pieces of food in his lunchbox. He described pulling the food out of his lunch box and placing them on a (six pointed) Pentagram burned into the grass in the clearing from Lost in Space. He placed one food item on each point of the star: fried egg, steak, olive loaf, milk, sloppy joe, and a Slim Jim. The UdderBall was placed in the center of the pentagram, as ordered telepathically by the Robot. The narrative continued with wind, fog, a tornado emanating from the Udderball and Trey could see into his own future where he saw Page, Mike and the band and a strange angelic man (Tom Marshall) wearing square black glasses accompanied by “strange heavenly” music singing a song telling Trey about his future. At that point, the band segued into the 1st/only I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) [Proclaimers cover] with Tom Marshall on vocals. Harry Hood included a Glowstick War and was unfinished. Before Guyute, Trey said they would to play one more song, saying that they’d keep playing all night but can’t because of curfew. After Guyute, the band came back on and Trey explained it was 10 minutes to midnight, so they would jam until New Years Eve. Pete Carini was called up to the stage (on his birthday, 12/30) during Carini. Frankenstein included an extended digital delay loop, a dance and vacuum solo by Fish, and Trey catching and throwing glow sticks. The encore ended at 12:25 AM. After this show, Fish popped up at The Dude Of Life Band (made up of members of Pork Tornado) after-show at Downtime NYC and sat in on drums for a few songs including Self. This show was released in 2009 on CD and audio/video download and streaming as LivePhish 12/30/97 New York, NY.
