Show Notes
This was Phish’s first show at the The Grey Hall (Den Grå Hal) – a former horse barn made out of stone with a wooden roof built in 1891 that was turned into a 1500-capacity music venue in 1970 in the Freetown Christiana section of Copenhagen. It was the first show of a 3-night stand (their first 3-nighter abroad), tickets cost Kr 150.00 and the show was sold out. The band had tech. rehearsal in this room the previous day and worked on Roggae, The Moma Dance, Ghost, Birds Of A Feather, Meat, Frankie Says, Brian And Robert, Fikus, and new arrangements of Water In The Sky and Limb By Limb. The back doors of the venue were open so rehearsal could be heard on the street and tapers were able to make a recording from outside. After soundcheck on the show day, Trey announced “we’re happy to say that our new album is about to come out – it’s called Bare Back Potato Sack….and the pictures of Fish with the cowboy hat.” This was the debut of the new faster samba’ish Water In The Sky arrangement which Mike called “The Arpeggiated Version.” This was also the 1st Roggae, The Moma Dance, and Brian and Robert played in public. Ghost contained a San-Ho-Zay tease. Tube included a tease of Sand. This was the only Stash > Cities and Wolfman’s > Frankie Says pairing to-date. During The Moma Dance, Trey explained that the song used to be called Black-Eyed Katy and was now called The Moma Dance and taught the audience the dance. This was the first Ha Ha Ha played in more than a year (since 2/26/97). Todd Phillips’ film crew shot footage at this show for what would become Bittersweet Motel and Water In The Sky from the soundcheck was included in the movie. The Spring 1998 Doniac Schvice Phish News gave an update on spring and summer plans including an announcement of the upcoming record (that eventually became The Story of the Ghost) and plans to work with producer Andy Wallace throughout spring and early summer. The Schvice also announced summer tour “The tour starts with a warm-up visit to Europe in the early part of July that features three extended stays in some favorite cities, including the band’s first ever shows in Barcelona. The tour continues stateside beginning on the West Coast. The band will be returning to a number of familiar haunts, including a two-night run at The Gorge (which features a large campground on site). From there the tour winds its way gradually east, visiting a few new venues along the way: Woodlands Pavilion in Houston, Sandstone Amphitheatre in Kansas City, Polaris Amphitheatre in Columbus, and Vernon Downs Raceway, just outside of Syracuse. The tour culminates in Northern Maine with LEMONWHEEL, the latest in our series of end of summer extravaganzas. LEMONWHEEL will take place at Loring Air Base in Limestone, ME, the same site as last year’s Great Went. The warmth and hospitality of the locals combined with the ideal nature of the site made it an easy decision to return again this year. The ticketing system will be the same as last year – see pages 2-3 for more info. Though we’re returning to the same site and inviting back some old friends (vendors, performers, twice the Port-O-Lets, etc.) we look forward to creating another unique experience.”
