Show Notes
This was Phish’s only performance at Le Transbordeur – a nightclub/concert hall opened in 1989 with a capacity of 1,800. Tickets cost FrF 110,00. At the end of Harry Hood, Fish was introduced as “Jon Fishman, the Greasy Troll.” You Enjoy Myself > Ghost > (Béla Fleck’s) Trane To Conamarra Jam > Poor Heart featured Béla Fleck and The Flecktones (Béla Fleck and The Flecktonesat this time Victor Wooten, Roy “Futureman” Wooten and Jeff Coffin), who were in the area to perform the following day at Montreux Jazz Festival. YEM also featured teases of Down with Disease and Palmetto Quickstep (Henry T. Oates cover), the Flecktones bouncing along to the trampolines jam, and some simultaneous playing of Mike’s bass by Mike and Victor. During YEM’s bass and drums jam, Trey pointed out Pierre (a local Häagen-Dazs employee the band had met on the off days) and introduced Futureman and “The Greasy Troll” on drums and the rest of the Flecktones: Victor (“laying it down for Pierre”), Jeff, and finally Béla one at a time as they joined in. Coffin teased the Sanford and Son theme during Poor Heart, which also included teases of Yakety Sax and Rhapsody in Blue. Continuing a “Pierre” theme from much of set II, the band brought Pierre onstage during the encore. After this show the band and crew traveled 200 miles overnight to Marseilles, France.
