Show Notes

This show marked the 1st known live performance of Jump Monk (Charles Mingus cover) and, more notably, the 1st live performance of Trey’s Goddard College Bachelor of Arts Thesis “The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday” which is commonly known as ”Gamehendge”. McGrupp through Possum featured Trey’s narration, essentially as it appeared on the thesis recording, which was submitted to Goddard in July of 1988. This show also yielded, within the Gamehendge story, the 1st known performances of Tela and Colonel Forbin’s Ascent. This gig was also longtime manager, John Paluska’s introduction to the band when he wandered into Nectar’s with members of Ninja Custodian after a late season ski outing. Interestingly, Mike’s notes do not mention this show. Frank Zappa played earlier this night at Burlington Memorial Auditorium. Some if not all the band members attended Frank’s show and Page recalled fondly his memory of Frank holding up a Phish Logo shirt thrown onstage by the audience during his gig. Trey recollected that, during a pause in the Zappa show, he handed Frank “one of the OG Phish t-shirts” and Frank took it and hung it on a laundry line onstage and kept it with him the whole tour. Although it is believed that two or three sets were played, there is no known recording or setlist available for the rest of this show.
