Show Notes

This was a 1-set show opening for Canned Heat at the UMass (Amherst) Southwest Concert ’89, part of the Southwest Residential Area’s Southwest Week. Other bands on the bill included Atlantic Clarion Steel Drum Band and The Incredible Casuals. The event ran from noon-6pm at the Southwest Parking Lot with Phish playing second of the four bands at about 1:30pm. It was a rainy day and the gig was sparsely attended due to a ban on alcohol (according to a campus advertisement, climbing gear, land mines and outboard motors were also prohibited). This show took place around the time when the band visited Archer Studios to record the basic tracks for Bathtub Gin and Split Open And Melt using the prize money they won at the Rock Rumble.
