Show Notes
This was Phish’s 1st show at the Colonial – a 1920’s theater with a capacity around 900. It was an all ages show presented by Dionysian Productions with $9 advance tickets. Over the years there has been some confusion about the order of the sets, but what is listed here is the correct sequence and order. In recognition of the band’s last Keene show on 2/22/90 which was cut short when the Fire Marshall closed the building between sets when heavy smoking set off the fire alarm, Trey joked “Welcome to the second set…sorry we took such a long break” This show featured the 1st and only performance of Metal Bagel Death, a Creature-esque ditty performed for John Carlin (of The Joneses) and Garrett Mead, who owned and ran Keene Bagel Works at the time. Trey used the end of Caravan to introduce Fish by singing “Henrietta” to the tune of Caravan. Fish began If I Only Had A Brain by saying “I have never seen so many people so excited over a vacuum cleaner.” If I Only Had A Brain ended with Fish singing through the vacuum, followed by a full-band vocal finale before Trey introduced him and briefly teased a bit of Caravan as Fish’s outro. Simple Gifts (Elder Joseph Brackett cover popularized in “Appalachian Spring”) was teased during the Contact intro.
