Show Notes

This was Phish’s 1st show at Assembly Hall – a dome-shaped basketball arena on the campus of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a capacity of 16,800. The venue’s exterior has a flying saucer look earning it the fan nickname The Othership. Tickets cost $20.00 and the show was sold out. The Dog Log soundcheck included a Beat It (Michael Jackson) tease. Trey sang Catapult in the only Possum > Catapult pairing to date. Makisupa keyword was “dank” but Trey included some whispered additional alternative lyrics “Gaddafi in my bed, Paluska on my head, Hooper in my bed, Goldstein on my head.” I’m Blue I’m Lonesome was performed acoustic with Trey on acoustic guitar, Mike on banjo, Page on upright bass and Fish on mandolin. The Simpsons secret language was played before Stash. Possum contained Dave’s Energy Guide jamming. Makisupa Policeman included some alternate lyrics about Paluska, Gaddafi, and others. The band sang Sweet Adeline while turning in a circle facing different parts of the audience for an exaggerated delivery in the round. After this show the band and crew traveled 255 miles overnight to Madison, Wisconsin.
