Show Notes
This was Phish’s only performance at Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion – a basketball arena (Bill Walton’s retired #32 and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s retired #33 jersey numbers hang from the rafters) on the campus of UCLA opened in 1965 with a capacity of 12,785. Tickets cost $25.00. In a nod to Frank Zappa, the show opened with the first Peaches en Regalia played in nearly two years (since 12/31/94). Zappa, an LA resident for most of his life, had performed at Pauley Pavilion with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra performing his orchestral music. Zappa also recorded Just Another Band From L.A. at the Pauley. Reba ended without whistling. As he had done in Portland on 11/24, Trey substituted alternate lyrics “Norton Charlton Heston” for the Marco Esquandolas section of Run Like An Antelope. During Simple, Fish shouted out “Hey Nomo” to a fan in the front row wearing a Hideo Nomo (Japanese born pitcher and 1995 MLB Rookie of the Year for the Los Angeles Dodgers) jersey. After this show the band and crew traveled 373 miles overnight to Phoenix, Arizona.
