Show Notes

This was Phish’s eighth show at Red Rocks and the third show of a 4-night stand. Tickets cost $25.00 and the show was sold out. During the break in Rift, Trey quoted U2 (as he’d done at Nectar’s during the 7/25/88 Icculus in anticipation of the Colorado ’88 tour) “This is Red Rocks, This is the Edge!” Suzy Greenberg contained a Simple tease. Trey substituted the alternate lyrics “21 year old Phish Fan Marcus Esquandolas” for “Marco Esquandolas” during Run Like an Antelope repeating a newspaper quote about the commotion in downtown Morrison the previous night. Tweezer contained a Norwegian Wood jam. This Harry Hood introduced the infamous audience “Hood” chant taken from flyers handed out in the lots in an attempt to increase crowd participation (see also 8/4/96 Divided Sky sit-down). It started to rain during Big Black Furry Creature From Mars and Purple Rain began on-cue. Simple from this show was released in 2003 on the ‘Carved In Stone’ CD benefiting The Rocks Fund, which is dedicated to the preservation of this unique venue.
