Show Notes
This was Phish’s 1st and only show in Des Moines at what was then known as the Civic Center Theater – a modern, mixed use theater with a capacity of 2,600. This venue boasted exceptional acoustics and single-level seating so intimate that no seat in the house is more than 44 meters from the stage. Soundcheck featured an unusual version of Makisupa Policeman played to the groove of some cover song – perhaps I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong cover popularized by Smokey Robinson). Sweet Adeline was performed A cappella without microphones and was sandwiched between The Asse Festival and Guelah (The Fly) by way of the Digital Delay Loop Jam. Down With Disease included the “write it down” incantation. Trey sang the verses of Fee through his megaphone. Similar to Sweet Adeline, My Sweet One was also performed acoustic without amplification and was sandwiched in the middle of I Didn’t Know. This show marked the 1st time the band ever opened a set with Frankenstein. You Enjoy Myself contained teases of On Broadway during the jam and vocal jam, which led smoothly into Hold Your Head Up. Fish started his Hold Your Head Up intro by singing (to the tune of HYHU) “I hate this song, I hate this song. You know i hate this song” as an opportunity to explain that he hates the song although “it’s nothing personal against Argent or anything. I just hate the way they abuse me with it.” The band rewarded him with a few extra stanzas. Possum also included teases of On Broadway as well as teases of Dave’s Energy Guide. After this show the band and crew traveled 243 miles to Minneapolis for a day off.
