Show Notes
This was Phish’s 2nd visit to the Vanderbilt campus and their only time playing Memorial, a basketball gymnasium with a capacity of 4,112. Tickets cost $17 for general public. Instead of the usual Myfe! ending, My Friend My Friend ended with an unusual vocal jam segment with Mike and other band members improvising alternative lyrics that segued into the start of I Didn’t Know. Before Fish’s vacuum solo in I Didn’t Know, Trey introduced him as Ron Jaworski. Guyute included the alternative lyric “dancing like a newborn elf.” After Silent In The Morning (before it faded into Reba), Trey re-introduced Fish as “the Creature from the Black Lagoon on drums.” Trey teased Dave’s Energy Guide during Reba and Sample In A Jar after Old Home Place. Béla Fleck joined the band on banjo for Scent Of A Mule, Lifeboy, Old Home Place, Beaumont Rag, Nellie Kane and Llama. Old Home Place, Beaumont Rage and Nellie Kane were performed acoustic with Trey on acoustic guitar, Mike on banjo, Mike on upright bass, Page on Melodica and Fish on Madonna washboard. Llama began acoustic with Page on Melodica but the band returned to their instruments one-by-one during the song until it was fully electric with Béla on banjo.. Before My Sweet One, Trey thanked the crowd. After this show the band and crew traveled 724 miles overnight to St. Petersburg, Florida for a day off.
