Show Notes

This was Phish’s third show at Tipitina’s – an 18-and-over gig with Col. Bruce & The Aquarium Rescue Unit opening. They opened the show by performing Memories without microphones. The You Enjoy Myself vocal jam developed from “salami” and included some blood curdling screams. David Bowie, Take The ‘A’ Train, Hold Your Head Up, Love You and Possum included some or all of Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit sitting in including Apt. Q-258 aka Jeff Sipe, Oteil Burbridge, Jimmy Herring and Matt Mundy. At times Fish played percussion and trombone while Apt. Q-258 played his drum kit. The Possum intro included teases of the Barney Miller Theme. Trey introduced Rocky Top as “Aquarium Rescue Unit’s favorite song.” According to some herstoric reports, Bob Dylan was sighted at this show but this outformation is unconfirmed. Lawn Boy and Fire comprised a second encore, performed after the band left and returned following Rocky Top. There is no set I soundboard recording in the archives – the set I setlist was compiled from Rick Supan’s audience recording. Set II of this show was remastered and released as part of the archival New Orleans Relief Download release to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans Relief is available at LivePhish.com and all proceeds benefit the Tipitina’s Foundation and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation. Note that the Nov/Dec 91 Phish Update (of which this was the first active date listed) included a section titled “Hey college students! Get on the Phish.net!”, explaining the Phish.net, who was on it and how to join them. This same newsletter included a Help Wanted classified ad for a new crew member – a position for which Brad Sands was eventually hired.
