Show Notes

This was Phish’s third performance at Roseland Balllroom and the second show of a 2-night stand. Before the show, the band participated in a “Rift” photo shoot with photographer Michael Lavine. Wilson contained The Simpsons and Random Note secret language and Trey played the beginning of My Friend My Friend on acoustic guitar. Sweet Adeline was performed without microphones. Mike introduced Mike’s Song by repeating a few variations on “This is my song and it’s going out to Cilla”, then singing the the “call it what you will but you know it’s my song” lyrics, to which Trey sang in response “call it what you will but you know it’s his song.” During Hold Your Head Up, Fish introduced the band and then said “well, here I am.” When Fish refused to tell The Prison Joke during Lengthwise (“no prison joke. You guys are going to have to get that on that tape.”) he instead sang Lengthwise which the audience responded to by holding up lighters and singing along. He then added an alternative verse about burning your fingers from holding up a lighter “way too long”. John Popper jjoined the band on harmonica for Buried Alive and Possum. For the encore, Fire, John Popper stayed out on harmonica and the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Noel Redding took over on bass while Mike joined Page on keyboards, playing some organ. After this show, Page and Trey played with Noel Redding, John Popper, Bernie Worrell, Paul Schaefer, Anton Fig, Will Smith, Warren Haynes, Dave Matthews and others at The Ritz Power Jam. Meanwhile, Fish sat in with Shockra at The Wetlands, playing vacuum and reading from Sun Ra’s Book of Information.
