Show Notes

This was an all ages, 1-set show opening for Santana. It was Phish’s 1st performance at Blossom, a pyramid-esque wooden and wooded, semi-natural amphitheater with a capacity of about 18,000 with acoustics worthy of the Cleveland Orchestra. Suzy Greenberg started with the alternate a cappella introduction “little Suzy Greenberg with her head caved in.” Before Uncle Pen Trey announced the band was going to play a Bill Monroe song and that they were going to have “our friend Al come out to play washboard.” They couldn’t find Al so the song was played as usual (without added washboard). Following Phish’s opening set Trey, Page, Mike, and Fish on Madonna Washboard sat in with Santana for Elmore’s Boogie, and Trey stayed out to play a duet with Carlos on Blues For Salvador.
