Show Notes

This was an all ages show with Widespread Panic opening. The Anaconda Theatre venue had a storied history. it was originally the Bank Of America building when it was burned down by UCSB student rioters in the Isla Vista riots of 1970. After that it became a nightclub, eventually named the Anaconda Theater. The night Phish played, there was plenty of space to move. The second-song of set II Possum featured Random Laugh, The Simpsons, Oom Pah Pah and Fall Down secret language. Harpua was teased during Colonel Forbin’s Ascent and Fly Famous Mockingbird contained a Gamehendge narration that started with “this is is our 1st time in Southern California. Right now what we want to do is…take you on a little journey back to where we come from, because we’re troubadours from a different place.” Trey started explaining the whole story until Mike, especially expressive during this show, dropped into a brief Icculus and was joined by the band (twice). This Gamehendge narration, which spanned the transition from Mockingbird to Icculus and back, was the genesis of the “Helping Bendly Frook”. Many present had never heard of Gamehendge and this was the first Icculus played in about a year (since 4/6/91). During Terrapin, Fish introduced the band and crew, which at this time included: Paul Languedoc (front-of-house engineer), Chris Kuroda (lighting designer), Peter Schall (monitor engineer), Andrew Fischbeck (road manager), Brad Sands (all purpose roadie) and Amy Skelton (merchandise). Carolina, Memories and Sweet Adeline were performed without microphones. This show kicked off a legendary run of shows up the California coast. The show was memorialized in an infamous bootleg CD called “Follow Me To Gamehendge”.
